40 Year Old Virgin

I haven't been feelin' the urge to blog the past few days. Not sure what it is, but thought I should post something to keep my legions of fans happy.

I watched this movie last night. And it was pretty funny, liked it more than I thought I would.

The one thing I noticed is that it worked the pacing the opposite way that lots of slapstick gross-out movies have worked. They tend to keep it really funny and try to maintain that humour the entire time. And by the end you are burned out and the schticks get old. But, this has a nice pacing and eazes you into the really stupid jokes.

And I love me some Catherine Keener. You go girl!

Grade: B+

Yay! I loved watching that movie with you and veggie cous-cous. Thanks for hanging out with me, C-genda. The whole Michael McDonald thing makes me laugh. So does that female manager singing that spanish "Cuando" song. And I love Catherine Keener too. I want to see Friends with Money SO hard.

i actually hated this movie. i watched with a straight friend and she kept saying I didn't like it because I am "gay". I was like 'what does that have to do with anything'???

CS, I didn't like it either and I'm a straight female. I watched it with my brother, who is gay and he didn't like it either, so I don't think it has anything to do with liking the movie. My grade F-. There was a couple hours of my life I can't get back.

It's no Airplane! or Naked Gun, but it's good fun mindless entertainment. I found some fun humor in that Carell's character reminds me so much of a good friend of mine who is currently a real-life 31-year-old virgin and seriously has those collectibles sitting around his room. However, in the end, I liked Carell better in Anchorman. His humor works better in the "sidekick" role than as the main character, I think.

Whatevs, loved the film. As brainless as it appears, it's actually one of the better 'thinking man's" comedies to come along since Being John Malkovich, which Keener was also in. It was one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2005, on innumberable Top Ten Lists (made AFI's and Ebert and Roeper's)and was nominated by both the Producer and Writer's Guild for film and screenplay, respectively. I was very surprised when I saw this movie, was dragged kicking and screaming, but ended up liking it a ton.

I think C-genda's right--the brilliance lies in its timing, as opposed to a lot of other dim-witted movies that throw the punchlines in your face to a dismal effect.

But Keener's also in one of my other favorite comedies of all time, Lovely and Amazing. I love her!
